Q: universal garage opener on kia optima?
i own a 2004 Kia Optima and lost the owners manual. i would like to program the universal garage opener that comes in the car but dont know how. also i want to change the temperature display from celcius to farenheit.

A: I have the same vehicle (‘04 Optima EX V6) and the manual says the vehicle ignition should be on the “ACC” position (key). 1st) The manual says when programming for the first time you need to press the two outside buttons (the house with 1 dot and the 3 dots), releasing when the indicator lights begin to flash (approx. 20 seconds). That erases the factory-set default codes. DO NOT perform this step when programming additional transmitters. 2nd) Hold the transmitter you want to encode into the homelink 1 to 3 inches away from the bottom of the mirror. Simultaneously press the homelink button you want to “train” and the transmitter button. The indicator light will flash slowly at first, then rapidly, indicating successful programming.

Note: if the device is rolling-code equipped you must…

1) Locate the “learn” or “smart” button on the device’s motor head unit.

2) Press and release the “learn” or “smart” button on the device’s motor head unit.

3) Return to the vehicle (within 30 seconds) and firmly press and release the programmed HomeLink button. Press and release the same HomeLink button a secon time to complete the training process. (Some devices may require a third time to complete the training.)

For the AC Temp readout press the “AMB” button and the temperature control “Down” button simultaneously for three seconds. I’ve always had my car running while doing this.

A: you probs need to fill it with power steering fluid then turn the wheel both ways 6 times all the way both way’s

that should fix it if it doesnt bring it to a shop and have them look at the power steering

ok so my mother went to work this morning and thought her transmission up so she got some of the guys that work with her too take a look at it and turns out there was no transmission fluid in it, so she got them to go buy some transmission fluid and they ended up putting 2x as much than it needed so now i need to drain some of it out. please help!

A: you could use a hand held fluid transfer pump to remove the fluid through the dipstick tube.

OR:

On most transmissions, you must remove the transmission oil pan to drain the fluid. Some transmission pans on recent vehicles include a drain plug.

To drain and refill a typical transmission, the vehicle must be raised on a hoist.
After the vehicle is safely in position, place a drain pan with a large opening under the transmission’s oil pan.

you really need to find out why it had no fluid, if it has a leak, it will need to be fixed. if you don’t have a drain plug and have to remove the pan, be prepaired for a messy job.

You may be better off to go ahead and get it checked out and get the leak fixed.

Q: How to improve performance and possibly add horsepower to my 4cyl 2002 kia optima?
i plan on replacing the muffler, the tires, and adding an intake im not sure what type of intake yet(cold air, short ram??), but i would also like to know what else i could do that would improve the performance and give me more horsepower. i know that its not the most powerful engine but its my first car and it was a steal at $5000, but any advice to give me a little more power would help

A: My advice to you andrew is do not listen to the guy above me as he is an idiot. A nitrous kit would completly eat up your little engine and is stupid to do to a kia. You want to get a new exhaust system, and get a cold air intake kit. A turbo will destroy your tranny cause I guarentee you have an automatic. I suggest thats all you do but a big upgrade could be to get a stroker kit itll give you maybe 70 more horsepower.

A: If the car is a regular gasoline engine, no! If it’s a diesel engine, you can modify the fuel system to use biodiesel (vegetable oil). The main problem is that you have to keep the oil fluid, since used oil tends to coagulate, you’ll have to keep the lines warm enough to keep the biodiesel flowing. They sell kits online and there may be a local shop that can install a kit. The main problem is where will you recycle the oil, you could use your garage, but it is a fairly big operation to tackle as a novice mechanic. There may be federal laws not allowing you to produce a certain amount of fuel, you’ll have to check into that.

It is in great condition except the motor or head gasket is blown.

A: You have a 4-5 $thousand car that needs 2-3 $thousand in repair. Without fixing the problem I don’t think you could get more than $800-$1000. Sometimes you can trade in a car like this, which will allow you to get into a new car and avoid the hassle of disposing of the junk car. Good luck.

Give as much info as possible. I do not want to damage the wood grain trim.

A: You’re going to need a mounting kit and harness the mounting kit should be part #99-7314 and the harness should be part #70-7301. Once you have those then remove the center plate, I believe it just unclips. You may need to remove the heater control cable or two. Then unbolt the radio. reverse these steps for the installation.
