Q: Late 90’s BMW 3 series vs. 5 series?
I heard that the 3-series BMW had more problems in the mid and late 90’s (97-99) and the 5 series had great reviews. I was just wondering if this was true because I’m hoping that I won’t have to spend as much to maintain a 1998 5-series BMW
A: The 98 might be OK but somewhere along the way they started making the sequential 6-speed transmission coupled with a drive by wire computer throttle. That combination causes an objectionable hesitation when you demand sudden acceleration, like getting onto a highway, or left turn in front of oncoming traffic, passing on country roads, etc…
The hesitation is about 2-3 seconds and sometimes can be critical. The dealer can’t do anything about it.

Q: Where can I rent a 5 series BMW in chicago, that won’t break my checkbook?
A: luxurymotors.com
try them. they have a lot of BMWs in stock. They have 3 series 5 series, 6 series 7series. But don’t buy a car from them. They have bad records as my friend had told me.
Q: what is the difference between a 5 series bmw and a 7 series bmw?
A: 7-series is BMW’s flagship vehicle. its less of a drivers car and more of a boss car, much like the benz s-class. 7-series are designed more for you to enjoy the luxury of riding in the rear while you have someone drive for you. 7-series also comes with more accesories and options for passengers and a larger engine to accelerate the extra weight.
5-series is smaller mid-size sedan built for family’s. it is more of a drivers car. less rear legroom and smaller engines are the main noticable differences of the 5series and 7series.
Q: Thinking of getting a BMW 5 series as my next company car. Good choice or is there anything better out there?
A: 5 series is good but personally I would go for an Audi of equivalent size….
Q: What is the life expectancy in miles of mercedes E-class, BMW 5 series, honda accord, toyota camry?
A: The only one I can really Vouch for is the Toyota Camry, I have seen them do over 600,000km… (372,822mi) was used as a Taxi.
Any one of the pick will last for a very long time, as long as you look after it, and get a known to be good engine.
Q: I am being offered a 5 series bmw 2L for £800 I drove it and it seems good. had a good look round it and ok?
would you think its worth buying
A: I bought a 7 series for what I thought was cheap and now at the 60 day mark it has been in the shop for 52 days of the 60 and every time it comes out of the shop they say its fixed and same day check engine light comes back on with new codes…Have spent more than what I payed for it and still not fixed… I have cried many days about this…. and have spent my saving since I traded my saturn(which only needed about 600 of work) and need the car for me and my children in short I will never ever ever buy a used bmw from anyone but BMW.
Q: Best audio set-up for a 2003/2004 BMW 5 series.?
I am looking to outfit my 5 series bmw with new head unit, speakers, subs, amps, etc and am interested to hear some opinions as to what the best combo of products might be. I lean completely towards SQ, and want to spend in the 1500-2000 range for everything. Also, i prefer more obscure brands to the JL’s, Sony’s, Kenwoods, etc…your ideas would be much appreciated
A: Well, there is no “best” as it’s all preference as you so state. Go to a pro audio shop and grab a listen. Only you know what you like, nobody can tell you different.
Obscure or not, if it’s not 2006 CEA Compliant it’s crap.

Q: Is the ride on a BMW 5 Series smooth? How does it compare to a 7 Series?
A: Wow alot of long useless answers!!
here it is:
5series is smooth, the Sport Package (upgraded susp.) tends to make the ride alittle rougher.
7series very smooth, what do you expect for the $$$$$
best bet…. go drive both of them.. and decide!!
Q: I have a 5 series bmw. parked up for 4 months. I now cannot open the door of the car?
The battery might be flat. The remote will not open the car. The key will not open the car only the boot. What can I do?
A: Depends on what year your 5 series is. If it is ‘96 on (an E39) the battery is in the boot, on the drivers side under the boot mat. Simply jump start the car from there. On earlier 5’s they are under the rear seat or under the bonnet depending on model. Generally rapid jiggling of the door lock with the key will gently ease the lock open. Try the passenger side. If this still does not work, get a spare battery, supply an earth to the car chassis underneath (any bare metal earth, even directly to the engine) and crawl under the front to locate the starter. There is a large bolt on the starter (13mm head) supply a 12v supply to this. (the thick wire from this bolt goes directly to the battery, and you should be able to work the remote to open the car and access the battery direct.
If you get stuck, message me……
good luck!
Q: Does anyone else find the radio/satelite (fin like) radio antenna on the BMW 5 series attractive?
I just like the thing. But that may just be me. Anyone else?
A: Well, it is a definite improvement over the standard antenna. Engineers are specifically designing the fin antenna so that it goes with the lines of the car. I think that most cars would look better without, but the fin is much better than the alternative.
Q: Calling all BMW 5-Series owners? (please help)?
Been hearing all negative type media on how unreliable BMW vehicles are. Are there any actual BMW owners here that could really give me information on reliability history? For example give me reliable history on the 2005 BMW 525i model if you could please. I know they are expensive, but someday I’d love to own one for myself but rather save the trouble if they are not reliable.
Also are they expensive to maintain, parts. How much is a regular oil, filter change run? Insurance cost all the information that could really help me out. Thanks in advance.
The reason why I like these cars is simply because I had a friend come down from Arizona and he had a BMW 5-Series model which was simply an amazing car. The ride is so smooth, beautiful interior, great sound system.
A: BMW is amazing, durable and reliable car.
if any newspaper says that is a unreliable car, then they are asking for trouble unless they can prove that the car is bad.
Any defects during the warranty period is taken care by the dealers.
.But bear in mind that BMW cars have to be properly and regularly maintained.Parts are little expensive but the durability is far beyond other cheap makes.
if you dont attend to minor repairs, problems will be there in the long run.
I own 2 of the BMWs.
520i – E28 – 1984- mannual(still the engine not been overhauled and tip top.)no complaints except the rubber bushings changed.
528i-E28- 1986- auto transmission.(still in tip top condition)
so far I have spent USD4000-6000 on both cars.Thats for the rubber bushings, shocks, brakes and tyres and servicing.
For your information my shock absorbers worked 14 years in my car.
My son owns 525i-2005 model and there is no complaints todate.
BMW cars are luxury and fast cars ,remember that.
You are buying one of the best cars in the world.
Those who cannot afford will give you negative thoughts about BMW cars.
I will be happy if you can afford a BMW soon.
wish you the best.
Q: 1990’s 5 series bmw MPG?
im thinking about getting a 523 bmw 5 series that has an automatic inline 6 cyl,2.5 liter engine.Does anyone have one of these? If so could you tell me if you get decent gas mileage?I know it wouldnt get great mpg but just want to know if its horrible. Also how much does it cost you to fill up? I think the year i want to get is a 96 but im not sure. BTW i looked it up and some sites said it gets 18/25 highway.
A: The 2.5 liter engines were the staple of the BMW line during the 90’s. They are really solid engines, but you have to remember that mpg is dependent on how you drive and type of driving your do. Don’t go by the posted mpg. I always keep track on mpg by the gallons used and miles actually traveled. If you are going by the manufacture specs, you have to remember that they have been recently revised because the mpg was gone on a testing site that wasn’t reflective on the “real world” driving habits.
My question would be why are you looking at this particular years and model? While a 2.5 in the 5 series may look like a good choice, I would consider a newer 2.5 liter 325i. Buying an older 5 series might look like a good deal, I would be very careful on where or who owned the car before you. If you know the owner and it is a single owner, than it would be ok.
Buy the later model with less miles. If you are buying this for the mpg, I would tell you look at a newer, smaller, ligher car.
Based on your questions, you appear to be concerned with costs. If this is a car they you really want and don’t mind the cost of keeping a 10 plus year old car, than you have your answer. If this was me, I would look for a better deal on something less than 5 years old. Trust me, the cost of keeping a BMW on the road for more than 10 years is very costly.
Q: What’s the difference between normal BMW 3 ser, 5 series and M3, M5?
thanks
A: The BMW M3 and M5 are performance versions of those models. Its like Mercedes-Benzs AMG. Its their in house tunning division.
For instance the BMW M5 has a 5.0L V10 in it developing 500 hp, and 384 lb-ft
where as the “normal” 5-series models have more sedate inline-6 cylinder or V8 engines.
as for the M3 the new one has a 4.0L V8 in it (previous M3’s had inline-6’s) developing 414 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque
where as the “normal” 3 series models have inline-6 cylinder engines.

A: You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carinsurance.yoll.net
